Does Perfectionism Live in Your Body?

Perfectionism doesn't only live in your thoughts. You may feel it in your body, too.

When you're constantly trying to get things right, avoid mistakes, meet expectations, or prove that you're doing enough, your body may begin carrying some of that pressure. Do you notice how your body feels?

Perfectionism can show up as tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, shallow breathing, stomach discomfort, restlessness, headaches, fatigue, or difficulty relaxing. You may not even realize how much tension you're holding until you finally slow down.

This is where body awareness can become an important part of understanding perfectionism. Instead of asking only, "What am I thinking?" you can also ask, "What am I noticing in my body?" Take a moment now. Observe where you feel tense and tight in your body. Do you notice a specific place that is more tense?

Learning to recognize these signals can support emotional regulation. When you notice tension, changes in breathing, or other signs of overwhelm, you can begin responding to your needs instead of automatically pushing through. For example: You notice you are tense in your neck and shoulders. Take a movement break every few hours. Move your shoulders, arms, and head around. Do you feel a release?

As a Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist, I help teens, college students, and adults explore the connection between perfectionism, emotions, and the body. Therapy can help you develop greater body awareness, emotional regulation, self compassion, and flexibility while still honoring the ambition and drive that can make perfectionism a strength.

Because your perfectionism was never the problem. Learning how to harness it is where transformation begins. Looking for a therapist who specializes in perfectionism, anxiety, and mind-body therapy?
