Is Perfectionism Really a Bad Thing?
What if you could harness your ambition, high achieving, desire for more as a superpower? There is a perception that perfectionism is something to overcome, to get out of your system, and that is an “issue” to stop doing in your life. What if we looked at perfectionism as a strength? Utilizing the ambition, drive, and goal directed behavior to fulfill your wildest dreams?
Perfectionists have the ability to see a challenge, plan, coordinate, and achieve. At times when perfectionism has become maladaptive perfectionism, perfectionists can feel overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious. What is maladaptive perfectionism? When you begin to have negative self criticism, have all or nothing thinking, severe procrastination, and your value tied to your achievements. This is when perfectionism can feel like a ‘bad thing.’
Turning your perfectionism into a superpower is about learning how to turn your self criticism into self compassion. Becoming more flexible, being motivated by the process, and finding joy in the success, ambition, and achievement.
The next step for me is what does perfectionism look like in your body? As a Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist I use movement and body awareness to inform, guide, direct, and build confidence. I’ve heard statements of “ my body feels tense”, “I can never feel relaxed”, and “I am so exhausted.” Including your body in the process of moving your mindset about perfectionism being an “issue” to a “superpower” is important.
Because your perfectionism was never the problem. Learning how to harness it is where transformation begins. Looking for a therapist who specializes in perfectionism, anxiety, and mind-body therapy?
